Your regulars love you and your Instagram looks great. But when a new person in the area searches "hair salon near me", "lash extensions in [town]" or "couples massage [town]", you're nowhere — and a salon you know is no better than yours is top of the map. It's not about your work. It's about what Google can see.

Short answer: most salons and spas are invisible on Google because they rely on Instagram instead of a Google Business Profile, their profile has the wrong categories or is incomplete, their website (if they have one) doesn't name their treatments and town, or they have fewer recent reviews than the businesses beside them. Every one of these is fixable in weeks, not months.

Instagram is not Google

This is the big one for beauty businesses. Instagram is excellent for keeping existing clients engaged and showing your work. But a new person who doesn't already follow you finds a salon by searching — and they search on Google, not Instagram. If your Google presence is weak, you're only reaching people who already know you.

The usual reasons salons and spas don't rank

1. Wrong or too few Google Business Profile categories

Your primary category should match your main business — Beauty salon, Hair salon, Nail salon, Day spa, Massage spa. Then add every relevant secondary category: Eyelash salon, Waxing hair removal service, Facial spa, Skin care clinic, Medical spa. Salons frequently have one category set and never appear for the other ten things they do.

2. An incomplete profile

No services listed with prices, six photos from opening day, no posts, hours that don't mention late nights. Google — and clients — favour complete, active, photo-rich profiles. Beauty is visual: 50+ good photos of your space and your work is the standard, not the exception.

3. Fewer, older reviews

Review count, rating and recency drive map-pack position. If the salon above you has 400 reviews and yours are mostly from two years ago, that's the difference. See how to get more Google reviews for your salon or spa.

4. No website, or a booking-platform page instead

A Fresha or Treatwell profile is not your website — it ranks for them, not you, and shows your competitors alongside you. You need your own site with your own domain, and a page for each treatment group you want to be found for: Nails in [town], Massage in [town], Lashes and brows in [town].

5. A website that doesn't say what or where

"Welcome to Serenity — relax, restore, renew" tells Google nothing. "Day spa in [town]: massage, facials and body treatments" tells it everything. Name your treatments and your town on the homepage and in page titles.

6. Inconsistent details across the web

"Serenity Spa", "Serenity Beauty & Spa" and "Serenity Day Spa Ltd" across Google, Instagram, Facebook, Fresha and Yell undermine Google's confidence. Pick one name, one phone number, one address format, everywhere.

7. Moved premises, profile didn't

Moved or rebranded and the old listing is still live? Duplicate or outdated profiles split your reviews and confuse Google. They need merging or closing.

What moves a salon into the map pack

  • Fix categories and complete the profile — every service with a price, 50+ photos, accurate hours, weekly posts (your Instagram content works perfectly here).
  • Build a review habit — ask every client, text a link afterwards, reply to every review.
  • Your own website, one page per treatment group — with "[treatment] in [town]" in headings, prices, gallery, and one-tap booking and calling.
  • Consistent NAP everywhere — Google, website, Instagram, Facebook, booking platforms, directories.
  • Structured data — BeautySalon / DaySpa schema so Google understands you.
  • Fast and mobile — nearly all salon searches are on a phone.

How long does it take?

Profile fixes usually show in two to six weeks. Website and review growth compound over three to six months. Suburban and town salons move faster than central city ones — we'll tell you honestly what to expect for your area.

Getting started

Search your top three treatments plus your town on a phone in an incognito window. Who's in the map pack? How many reviews do they have? Do you appear at all? That's your starting point.
