Why Isn't My Trade Business Showing Up on Google?
If customers can't find your plumbing, electrical or building business on Google, here's what's usually causing it — and how to fix it.
You've got a website. You do good work. But when you search for what you do — "plumber in [your town]", "electrician near me" — your business is nowhere to be seen and your competitors are at the top. This is one of the most common frustrations for UK tradespeople, and it's rarely about the quality of your work. It's almost always about how Google understands your business.
Short answer: most trade businesses don't show up because their Google Business Profile is missing, incomplete or unverified, their website doesn't clearly signal their trade and service area, or they have few or no reviews — all things Google weighs heavily for local search, regardless of how good the business is.
The most common reasons trade businesses don't rank
1. No Google Business Profile — or an unclaimed one
The single biggest factor for local trade searches. Google's map pack (the three businesses at the top) pulls almost entirely from Business Profiles, not websites. If yours isn't claimed and verified, you're invisible in exactly the spot most customers look first.
2. An incomplete or inconsistent profile
Having a profile isn't enough. Google favours listings with the correct category, full service descriptions, photos and consistent details. A profile with just a name and phone number is competing against ones with dozens of photos, every service listed and regular updates.
3. Few or no reviews
Review count and recency are a major local ranking signal. Three reviews from two years ago will consistently lose to 40 recent ones. See our guide on getting more reviews without being pushy.
4. A website that doesn't say what you do or where
Google needs clear signals to match your site to local searches. A homepage that says "Quality Service You Can Trust" without naming your trade and area gives Google very little to work with.
5. Inconsistent business details across the web
If your name, address or phone number differs even slightly between your website, Google profile and directories ("Dave's Plumbing" vs "David's Plumbing Services"), it undermines Google's confidence in your business's legitimacy and location.
6. No local content or backlinks
Sites with no location-specific pages and no other sites linking to them give Google little reason to consider them authoritative for local searches.
What actually moves the needle
- Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile — correct category, every service listed individually, real photos (not stock), accurate hours.
- Get consistent, recent reviews — ask satisfied customers, reply to every review.
- Make your website say clearly what you do and where — "[Trade] serving [town/region]" should be unmistakable on your homepage.
- Keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere — website, Google, every directory.
- Add location-specific content — a page per area you cover, or articles answering the questions local customers actually search.
- Get listed on relevant directories — general (Yell) and trade-specific (Checkatrade, TrustATrader) both help build consistency and authority.
How long does it take to see results?
Local SEO isn't instant. Most trade businesses see meaningful movement within 4–12 weeks of consistent work, with the biggest early wins from Google Business Profile fixes since those affect the map pack directly. Website and content changes compound more gradually.
