How to Get More Google Reviews for Your Salon or Spa (Without Nagging Clients)
Google reviews drive salon and spa bookings more than anything else. How to build a steady flow of five-star reviews naturally.
For a salon or spa, Google reviews are the new word of mouth. Someone new to the area searches "nail salon near me" or "massage in [town]", sees three businesses on the map, and books the one with the best rating and the most recent reviews. If that's not you, you're invisible to most new clients.
Short answer: ask every client at the end of the treatment while they're still glowing, follow up with a one-tap link by text within the hour, and make it part of your normal process rather than an occasional favour. Reviews that mention specific treatments and therapists help you rank for those exact searches.
Why reviews matter so much for salons and spas
- Clients are choosing an experience. They can't see your work before they book. Reviews describing the atmosphere, the therapist and the result are the closest thing to trying you first.
- Google ranks on them. Count, rating, recency and keywords in the text all feed your position in the map pack — the three listings that get most of the clicks.
- They fill quiet slots. A steady flow of recent reviews brings a steady flow of new clients, which is what fills a Tuesday afternoon.
What actually works
1. Ask at the moment of the mirror
The end of the treatment — when the client sees their nails, their colour, their skin, or stands up from the massage table — is peak happiness. A warm, natural ask right then works better than anything: "I'm so glad you love it. If you've got a moment later, a Google review would mean a lot to us."
2. Text a one-tap link within the hour
Most clients intend to leave a review and then get on with their day. An automated text an hour after the appointment — "Thanks for visiting [Salon] today! If you loved your treatment, a quick review helps us so much: [link]" — catches them while the feeling is fresh. Use your direct Google review link.
3. Make it beautiful and visible
A small, well-designed card at reception or in the treatment room — "Loved your visit? Scan to leave a review" — with a QR code. On-brand, not a laminated A4 sheet.
4. Ask by name, for the therapist
"Would you mind mentioning Amy in your review? It really helps her." Clients love supporting the person who looked after them, and reviews that name therapists and treatments ("Amy's gel manicure", "the hot stone massage") help you rank for those searches and help new clients choose who to book with.
5. Reply to every single review
Short, warm, personal. "Thank you so much, Jess — Amy will be thrilled. See you next month!" It signals to Google that you're active and to prospective clients that you care.
6. Add it to your rebooking flow
If you already send an appointment confirmation or reminder, the review request belongs in the same sequence. Consistent beats occasional.
What not to do
- Don't offer discounts or freebies for reviews. It breaks Google's rules and can get reviews removed or your listing suspended.
- Don't only ask clients you know were happy. "Review gating" is against Google's policies. Ask everyone — your rating will still be high, and the occasional 4-star makes the 5-stars credible.
- Don't ignore a negative review. Reply calmly, apologise for the experience, and offer to make it right offline. Future clients read your reply more closely than the complaint.
How many do you need?
More than the two salons either side of you in the map pack, and a steady flow of new ones. A salon seeing 60 clients a week that asks everyone should add 20–40 reviews a month. Within a few months you're the obvious choice.
Getting started
Search your own salon in an incognito window and compare your rating, review count and most recent review date with your nearest competitors. That's the gap to close.
